Medical Big Rig - High-tech help for epidemics

October 13, 2014

The laboratory of the future is mobile. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering have developed the world’s first truck outfitted with a full array of automated laboratory technology.

In the event of an epidemic, the 18-meter-long truck could allow medical staff to take blood and urine samples and analyze them on-site, administer medications or carry out vaccinations. That offers numerous advantages, including rapid diagnosis and the ability to provide medical care to remote regions. Analyzing the samples automatically would also help public health workers quickly carry out measures to stop an epidemic’s spread. We accompany a biomedical truck on a test ride.
